Bikeworks Beach and Sports –> Mauna Lani Resort

This is the only Bicycle Safe Route to Mauna Lani Resort from Waikoloa Beach. Please do not attempt to bike the King’s Trail. Even walking the bike across is questionable.

Bikeworks Beach and Sports –> Hawi

Winds can be strong along the coastline south of Hawi.

Last stop for water heading to Hawi is in Kawaihae Harbor Town.

Shoulder narrows by the Mauna Kea Resort, but opens back up after Kawaihae Harbor Town.

Bikeworks Beach and Sports –> Hawi –> Kohala Mountain Road –> Bikeworks Beach and Sports.

Most people prefer going out to Hawi and back as going over Kohala Mountain Road and down Kawaihae Road there is little to no shoulder in most places. We do reccomend having front and rear flashers for this ride.

If you do attempt this route, please do not climb Kawaihae Road (Hwy 19), as it is a very busy road, and the shoulder on the climbing side is even smaller than the descending shoulder.

Bikeworks Beach and Sports –> Bike Works Kona

The southern portion of the Iron Man Route simply runs south into Kailua-Kona.

Great shoulder, but no water along the way.

Stop by Bike Works Kona for refils on air, water, and nutrition before heading back north!

Bike Works Beach and Sports –> New Saddle –> Old Saddle Loop

Awesome Climb! From sea level to 5,935ft.

Shoulders:

  • Waikoloa Village Road has a wide shoulder.
  • Highway 190’s shoulder has some narrow sections.
  • Daniel K. Inoue Hwy. has a great shoulder.
  • Old Saddle Road has very little shoulder. Descending is more reccomended than climbing. (It is not a busy road, but please be mindful that you are sharing the lane with cars).

Old Mamalahoa Hwy. –> Waipio Valley Lookout

Great ride to do if the family is with you. Get dropped off on the end of the Old Mamalahoa Hwy., ride to Honokaa.

Honokaa is a small little historic town with some neat shops to check out.

Then ride out from there and meet up at Waipio Valley lookout! If you have four wheel drive, load the bike up, drive in and enjoy some beach/waterfall time!

Honokaa –> Old Mamalahoa Hwy.

1,550ft if just riding till end of Old Mamalahoa Hwy.

If you wish to loop, you can ride the main highway back down to Honokaa.
